There is no better way for me to wrangle my three kids to play together then to suggest we all play a board game. Even my husband likes to get in on the action. Hands down the most popular game in our household is Zingo!
One of the reasons that it’s a favorite is it works beautifully for all ages. Yes, I know it’s marketed for kids 4-8, but because of it’s fast paced nature even Big (12) is happy to play it. This game is an updated version of Bingo where each player gets a card with a 3 by 3 grid that shows pictures and words. The cards have a yellow side which are easier for younger kids and a red side which is for the older ones. There is a plastic game piece dispenser called “a Zinger” which is well-designed and fun for the kids to use. My kids take turns sliding the zinger and having the two picture tiles pop out. Players shout out to claim a piece, which is then placed over the appropriate square on the player’s card. The first one to fill their card completely yells “Zingo” and the game is over.
As if I didn’t love this game enough, they just came out with Zingo Sight Words targeted at kids pre k-2nd grade. It’s exactly the same game set up, only instead of the pictures they use sight words. If you have a child that is ready to start learning sight words or one that is struggling to learn them, this is a super fun way for them to practice (in fact they won’t even realize they’re learning while playing. Score for you!).
Both versions of this game move at a quick pace and don’t take too long to complete so they’re perfect for injecting some quick family fun into a weeknight in between homework and baths (and you’ll be done in time to watch Homeland).
If you don’t already have these games, they’d be great under the tree. Throughout the month of November, we’ll be posting lots of other great holiday gift ideas so make sure to keep reading.
