One of our favorite things to do on the weekends is take our kids out for a fun lunch. Chicago has so many quirky and cool spots to try! in fact, later this week, we’ll be posting a round-up of some of our favorite weekend lunch places. In the meantime, I have to give a shout out to Velvet Taco, a funky taco shop that just opened up in the Gold Coast. This is Velvet Taco’s first venture outside of Texas where they have shops in Dallas and Fort Worth. This welcome addition to downtown serves up delicious tacos, tater tots, and margaritas.
If you’re a breakfast lover, then you’ll be pleased to know that they serve breakfast tacos all day. Not into eggs? no worries because you can choose from 12-14 other combos. One of my favorites so far is the slow roasted rotisserie chicken taco with white queso, roasted corn and salsa. My other favorite was the pork belly taco. Yes, you heard me right. (It’s the one in the middle). This fast casual restaurant has a pork belly taco that is too die for! I also tried the flank steak taco, pictured on the right, which was another solid choice. All items are made to order using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
My kids can be picky eaters so I was thrilled to hear that they have a kid’s menu, although they don’t advertise it. Just ask and they’re happy to make kids a quesadilla, or plain steak or chicken taco. And for sides, they have awesome Tator Tots that will bring you back to your childhood. I ordered mine plain, but they can also be served with herbed goat cheese and an egg on top. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, then everyone was raving about the margaritas.
The soda fountain was a fun surprise. Velvet taco serves all-natural, pure cane sugar based soft drinks. I had the zero calorie soda and I didn’t even miss my standard diet coke.
As for the vibe, the restaurant is funky urban with a lot of reclaimed wood and exposed brick. There are tables downstairs by the counter, but there is ample seating upstairs with an lovely view down State Street.
And just to add to the awesomeness, they offer take-out rotisserie chickens. How convenient for a grab and go weeknight dinner?! I’m totally doing this one night this week.
You’re hungry now aren’t you? Here’s their full menu:
