The holidays are a magical time in Chicago. But with them, come the never ending slate of days off from both classes and school meaning we have tons of hours to fill with our kids. Given that the weather doesn’t lend itself to being outside all day, indoor playspaces become ever so important. Here is one of our new favorites to keep you and your kids busy through the holiday season and beyond.
Kid City: While not new to Chicago this one was new to us. Now that we’ve found it, we can honestly say that it’s one of our favorites. Located in the West Loop, Kid City offers more than 3,000 square feet of awesomeness (I mean play space). Big enough to keep the kids entertained and let them move around but small enough that the parents and caregivers can relax a bit. One of the nice things here is that rather than forcing the adults to sit on hard classroom chairs or god forbid those little toddler chairs; Kid City has a Parents Lounge connected to the main room (offering great visibility) and more importantly extremely comfortable couches and massage chairs (yup, you heard me). They provide complimentary coffee and see a few snacks but there is no real cafe. They have a large kitchen area and parents are invited to bring their own snacks and meals for themselves and the kids (nut free please).
As for what the kids might like, the list is endless. And in this case pictures are worth more than a thousand words because their website really does not do the place justice.
A dedicated toddler area with tons of fun toys:
The focal point of the main room is the large wooden playhouse which can easily accommodate 6-8 kids and has a play kitchen inside.
A separate large market area has multiple shopping carts and tons of play food
An unbelievable dress up playroom. Whether your youngster is into fairy princesses, swash buckling pirates or firemen they are all easily satisfied in this dream room. They also have tons of castles, pirate ships and doll houses.
Open play is Mon-Fri, 9:30 am to 6:00pm and does not get nearly as crowded as some of the other playspaces. All day admission for 1 child is $14. Pass cards and memberships are available. And on Wednesdays they have a drop off option where you can pre register your child for supervised playtime and take the opportunity to run a few errands.
Unfortunately, on the weekends they don’t offer drop in playtime as they are typically booked with their famous birthday parties. They have over 10 different party packages available on their website, and they will work with you to tailor any event to your specifications. If you scan the internet you’ll see the overwhelmingly positive reviews on their birthday packages.
Last but not least, they offer seasonal camps. Next week, they are offering a Thanksgiving Break Camp. You can register your kids for one, two, three or four days of camp but you should do so soon as spots are filling up. Activities will include playtime, crafts, story time and snacks.
