We’re there. 7th grade. Only a few weeks into the school year and already the social dynamic is changing. We’re now having dances, bar mitzvahs and co-ed movie trips and hang out sessions. The kids are ready. The girls & boys want to mix and interact with each other. But, sometimes when it comes right down to those first few minutes of interaction they need a little help… an ice breaker if you will. The Bean Boozled Game is the perfect solution!! Oh, how I wish this little game existed when I was in middle school. Let me explain.
Last week, Big & his friend were hanging out with 3 girls. There wasn’t much conversation going on, if any at all, which is funny because they all go to school together. After 20 minutes of awkward silence, I asked Big to come see me. Without saying a word, I put this jelly bean game in his hand.
He went back to the group, and they started playing it. They wound up sitting around laughing and chatting for over 2 hrs that night. The game was just what they needed to get the conversation going. I especially love that they had real interactions with each other without screens and texting. It was like back in the good old days!
It’s a super simple concept. The game includes a spinner and a dish of jelly beans with 10 wild and weird flavors and 10 look-alike tasty beans. The jelly bean pairs are identical so you cannot tell the good from the bad. Is it buttered popcorn or rotten egg? Is it tutti-fruitti or stinky socks? Spin the wheel, pick a bean and find out. You may or may not get BeanBoozled!
The game can be played with a small group, large group, in a small space (perfect for apartments, dorm rooms or hotel rooms), or out in the backyard. You could even bring it to a restaurant. It’s been such a success that I bought multiple sets, and the kids are already planning on taking it out Friday night for another group gathering. It’s suitable for younger ages as well. We first tried it at a summer BBQ with a group of kids ranging from 6-16 and they all got in on the action.
